Sam English Joins Carilion Biomedical Institute
Dr. English provides a direct link to university research. ROANOKE, Va. (December 17, 2001)—The Carilion Biomedical Institute (CBI) has named Dr. Sam English Manager of Research Projects. Prior to joining CBI, English served as an assistant professor and coordinator of interdisciplinary studies at the College of Health Sciences. His experience in developing programs of study that emphasizes multidisciplinary approaches in healthcare strengthens CBI’s ability to identify the potential in multiple research projects, then assist the researchers to envision the commercial potential. "Sam has the unique combination of a strong academic and research background to help cultivate continuing excellence in biomedical research at the universities," said Dr. Dennis Fisher, president & chief executive officer, Carilion Biomedical Institute. "Working as CBI’s liaison to the universities, he can assist us in working through complicated challenges such as the timely publication of research, protection of intellectual property and the matching of complementary research projects." "When working in academia, one has to stay focused on a small niche of scientific information to be productive and it is easy to lose sight of the bigger picture," said English. "I search for promising research and work to bring the research teams together to accelerate their developments." English received a bachelor’s of science degree in microbiology and his doctorate in biochemistry from Clemson University. He was a molecular biology postdoctoral fellow at the University of Missouri and a postdoctoral research fellow at Abbott Laboratories in Chicago. English has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles. According to English, identifying research projects, encouraging researchers to consider different applications of their technology and connecting them with productive partners is a key to getting new innovative products and procedures to the consumer. The Carilion Biomedical Institute is a private, nonprofit organization. CBI’s core partners are the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech and Carilion Health System. The Institute exists to accelerate research in life sciences, biomedical science and engineering, to create economic development opportunities in western and central Virginia and to improve the health of individuals worldwide. # # #
