Carilion Clinic

Carilion Clinic

• Carilion Clinic serves Western Virginia residents through a comprehensive array of health care services, provided through 10 acute hospitals and over 60 primary care physician practices and outpatient sites. As a teaching facility, the system’s medical education department consists of nine residency programs, which are affiliated with the University of Virginia.

• It’s largest medical center consists of two hospital campuses in Roanoke and is home to a number of specialized, regional services, such as a Level I Trauma Center, advanced cardiac surgical procedures, neonatal and pediatric intensive care services, air transport and a regional cancer center. Carilion is currently performing robotic heart surgery on the Da Vinci system and conducting unicondylar (partial knee replacement) procedures.

• As a not-for-profit organization, Carilion’s mission is to improve the health of the communities it serves, regardless of the ability of citizens to pay for health services. In FY 2002, the organization provided over $29 million in charity care. Through its Foundation, the System has granted over $3 million to health improvement projects since its inception in 1998.

• Carilion is dedicated to the use of technology in its medical settings because of its promise to improve patient safety and reduce medical errors. In recognition of its investment in technology, Carilion was named one of the country’s top 100 "mostwired" and top-10 "most wireless" companies by the American Hospital Association. It also won the 2002 National Quality Healthcare Award by the National Committee of Quality Healthcare.

• Carilion employs over 9,000 people, serves approximately 1 million people in its service area, and generates $1.4 billion in total revenues.
